Container City

BRIEF

For our first day of TB2 we had a charrette session to design a student housing made up of 15 shipping containers. They can either sit on leased land; the site is only available for 5 years maximum, water deck; close to land docked on a water site and finally structural grid; on top of a structure. The goal was to consider the quality of living, the spaces, container utility and the replicability and the spaces need to consider having single and mixed areas for the students to live in. The containers are 12.9m x 2.44m x 2.59m high. With this information my team, Eleonore, Sarah and I began designing.

SITE

We chose leased land with the idea to accomodate students needing emergency accommodation, such as when the Stanhope accommodation in Portsmouth was not ready in time for students to move into in September. More than 250 students were unable to move in days before the academic year began due to delays in construction and had to be placed in alternative student halls and housing. Linked below is the BBC news article about this.
